Er is geen geografische of historische reden waarom Liverpool en Chelsea een afkeer van elkaar zouden hebben, maar in de jaren 2000 was hun rivaliteit een tijdje een van de meest vermakelijke in het Engelse voetbal.
Het 'spookdoelpunt' van Luis Garcia in de halve finale van de Champions League in 2005 blijft het meest memorabele - en controversiële - moment van wat uitgroeide tot een van de meest beladen wedstrijden in het Engelse voetbal.
Het contrast tussen de fortuinen van de twee clubs in die tijd was bijzonder opvallend. Hoewel ze een arbeidersclub zijn, maakte Liverpool deel uit van de traditionele aristocratie van het Engelse voetbal, terwijl Chelsea in de lift zat, gefinancierd door het nieuwe geld van Roman Abramovich.

Een van de eerste belangrijke botsingen tussen de twee teams dateert eigenlijk van vóór Benitez en Mourinho.
Op de laatste dag van het seizoen 2002-2003 bezocht de Reds van Gerard Houllier de Blues van Claudio Ranieri in wat in wezen een regelrechte shootout was voor de vierde plaats en kwalificatie voor de Champions League.
Het belang van de overwinning van Chelsea die dag kan niet genoeg worden benadrukt. Een maand later voltooide Abramovich zijn overname van de Blues, maar het had heel anders kunnen lopen.
"Had Liverpool op die lentedag gewonnen, wie weet wat er gebeurd zou zijn?" Mark Fleming schreef in The Independent in 2011.
"Abramovich zou vrijwel zeker zijn roebels ergens anders heen hebben gebracht, en Chelsea had hetzelfde lot kunnen ondergaan als Leeds, of mogelijk erger, aangezien ze op dat moment met financiële vergetelheid werden geconfronteerd."

Het begin van iets bijzonders
In 2005 waren Mourinho en Benitez gearriveerd, en Chelsea was meedogenloos in hun pogingen om zich te vestigen als het te kloppen team in Engeland.
Mourinho's eerste trofee bij Chelsea kwam met een overwinning op Liverpool in de League Cup-finale. Gezien het drama van wat volgde tussen de twee teams, was het een passende turbulente ontmoeting.
John Arne Riisebezorgde Liverpool al na één minuut de leiding, maar Chelsea zegevierde met 3-2 na verlenging, waarbij Steven Gerrard een eigen doelpunt scoorde met nog maar 11 minuten te gaan van de oorspronkelijke 90 minuten.
Het spookdoel
Ongetwijfeld het meest beruchte moment van de rivaliteit. Ongetwijfeld het moment waarop de wedstrijd iets meer werd dan slechts twee van de beste clubs van het land die tegenover elkaar stonden.
Het feit dat Mourinho nog steeds klaagt over de controversiële poging van Luis Garcia – waarbij Liverpool de finale van de Champions League bereikte ten koste van Chelsea – zegt tot op de dag van vandaag alles. Net als Garcia die zich blijft verkleden als geest voor Halloween.

Het transferverzoek van Steven Gerrard
"Steven Gerrard is zeker een van mijn favoriete vijanden", zei Mourinho in 2015. En zoals het oude gezegde luidt: je houdt je vrienden dichtbij en je vijanden dichterbij.
Mourinho zou Gerrard proberen te contracteren bij Chelsea, Inter Milan en Real Madrid, en in de zomer van 2005, slechts zes weken nadat hij The Reds had geïnspireerd tot hun historische comeback tegen AC Milan in de Champions League-finale, diende de middenvelder een transferverzoek in.
Gerrard was geïrriteerd nadat contractbesprekingen waren vastgelopen en, zoals hij in zijn autobiografie beschrijft, besloot hij "een handgranaat in te zetten in de bestuurskamer van Liverpool".
De talisman van Liverpool zou uiteindelijk zijn toekomst aan Anfield toevertrouwen, maar de saga voegde alleen maar brandstof toe aan wat nu een woedend vuur van rivaliteit was.
Bekendheid kweekt minachting
Het volgende seizoen werden de teams, alsof ze de spanning wilden vergroten, in dezelfde Champions League-groep geloot, waarbij beide wedstrijden in een 0-0 patstelling eindigden.
In de Premier League zegevierde Chelsea met 4-1 op Anfield en met 2-0 op Stamford Bridge, maar in alweer een halve finale - dit keer in de FA Cup - behaalden de mannen van Benitez een 2-1 overwinning.
Tien ontmoetingen in twee seizoenen, maar we konden er geen genoeg van krijgen.
De bliksem slaat twee keer in
Voor het derde achtereenvolgende seizoen kwamen Liverpool en Chelsea in totaal vijf keer tegenover elkaar te staan.
The Reds zegevierden in de Community Shield, terwijl beide partijen elk een overwinning boekten in de competitie.
Op dat moment was Chelsea de dominante ploeg in Engeland, maar toen het om een tweede halve finale van de Champions League in drie jaar tijd ging, herhaalde Liverpool het succes van 2005 met een overwinning op strafschoppen.
Terugkijkend op die tijd zei Carragher tegen Lampard: "Ik zal eerlijk zijn. Ik kon je als club niet uitstaan. Het overtrof Everton en Manchester United als onze rivaliteit voor een periode."

Nieuwe gezichten, hetzelfde verhaal
Het volgende seizoen zag Mourinho Chelsea vertrekken, maar de twee teams bleven onafscheidelijk, met nog eens vijf ontmoetingen in 2007-2008.
Twee competitiewedstrijden werden vergezeld door Chelsea's 2-0 overwinning in de League Cup, waarin Peter Crouch werd weggestuurd voor een wilde uitval (nog meer bewijs, als het nodig was, hoe verhit de botsingen waren).
En de Blues, inmiddels onder leiding van Avram Grant, namen eindelijk revanche in de Champions League door in totaal met 4-3 te winnen in de halve finale, waarbij Lampard het beslissende doelpunt scoorde slechts enkele dagen nadat zijn moeder was overleden.
De rollen waren enigszins omgedraaid in 2008-2009, met Liverpool dat genoot van de betere competitiecampagne, maar Chelsea zegevierde in Europa.
Voor het vijfde achtereenvolgende seizoen ontmoetten de clubs elkaar in de Champions League en zorgden voor misschien wel de grootste gelijkspel van het stel.
Nadat Chelsea met 3-1 won op Anfield, dreigde Liverpool opnieuw een beroemde comeback in een pulserend 4-4 gelijkspel op Stamford Bridge.
In die vijf jaar hadden Liverpool en Chelsea elkaar maar liefst 24 keer ontmoet.
Torres wordt verrader
Na het vertrek van Benitez had Liverpool het zwaar onder Roy Hodgson, en Fernando Torres besloot Merseyside te ruilen voor West-Londen in een verhuizing van £ 50 miljoen die de Reds-gelovigen woedend maakte.
Het Chelsea-debuut van Torres kwam ironisch genoeg tegen Liverpool, toen zowel de fans als de spelers hun gevoelens goed kenbaar maakten. De vroege uitdaging van Daniel Agger liet de spits op de grond liggen en het sentiment werd gedeeld in de uit-tribune.
Laat dit niet wegglippen
Toen Mourinho in 2013 terugkeerde naar Chelsea, had de wedstrijd opnieuw een pantomime-slechterik.
Typisch, het waren Mourinho en Gerrard in het middelpunt van het verhaal, met de slip van de middenvelder die Manchester City de titel schonk na een masterclass van de Portugezen op Anfield.
Chelsea-fans waren er altijd snel bij om Gerrard aan dat moment te herinneren, vooral aan zijn laatste optreden op Stamford Bridge.
"Ik laat me er niet toe verleiden om de Chelsea-fans het beste te wensen, het was aardig van ze om vandaag een keer te komen opdagen", was het antwoord van Gerrard.
De deugden van respect worden vaak gepredikt in het voetbal, maar soms is er niets zo boeiend als een rivaliteit die is gebaseerd op slecht bloed.
